Southwestern Regional Housing and Community Development Corporation (SRHCDC) is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide safe, affordable housing and continued community development for low to moderate income residents of New Mexico. SRHCDC began in 2001 as Luna County Housing Corporation. The name was changed in 2008 to better reflect the scope of services and service area of the agency. SRHCDC serves the entire state with emphasis in Luna, Hidalgo, Grant, Sierra and Catron Counties.
Services provided by the agency include:
Development of single family homes for sale.
Development of multi-family complexes.
Rehab of owner-occupied housing for qualifying residents.
Weatherization and Energy Audits.
Credit counseling for individuals.
Financial literacy and home buyer education classes
Foreclosure intervention for individuals.
Matched Individual Development Accounts
Development Projects include:
Mariposa Village, senior apartments.
Sierra Vista, multi-family apartments
Slate Street Development, single family homes.
The organization started with only a director but has grown to a current staff of eight full time employees. Responsibilities vary from record keeping to counseling to instruction to oversight of rehab projects to marketing to researching more development opportunities. SRHCDC is governed by a board of directors drawn from the southwestern region of the state.
SRHCDC is continually looking for other funding sources and community development opportunities.
At the present time, the majority of funding comes from federal sources channeled through the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority. However, support and contributions have been received from individual members in the community as well as local governments.
While the scope of services and the area served grows, the roots of SRHCDC are firmly planted in Luna County. The support of the City of Deming and citizens of Luna County in particular has been crucial to the development of this agency. The board includes a core of members who are committed to the growth and health of Luna County. SRHCDC continues to work toward that goal.
