The Treasurer is required to keep account of all Luna County monies received and disbursed, keep track of all checks written and paid. The Treasurer is in charge of the deposit and safekeeping of public monies. This includes investments functions so that the highest rate of return can be maximized. The Treasurer must prepare a financial report monthly.
The property tax schedule is a public record and must be prepared and delivered by the assessor to the county treasurer by October 1 of each tax year. The Treasurer is responsible for the billing and collection of real and personal property taxes for Luna County. Property tax bills are mailed on November 1 of each year. The first half payment is due November 10th delinquent after December 10th second half payment is due April 10th delinquent after May 10th. Pursuant to Section 7-38-49 and 50 NMSA 1978, if property taxes become delinquent, a 1% interest and 1% penalty shall be imposed, but the total penalty shall not exceed 5%.
On July 1st of each year the treasurer is to prepare a property tax delinquency list for all taxes delinquent three years or more. This list is transferred to The State of New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, where at that time an additional $125.00 will be applied by the State to your total taxes.
